This hymn was panned at Chant Cafe today - that surprised me so I hunted it down on Youtube and I'm listening to it right now with about 2 minutes left.
The criticism was just. I find it clumsy-sounding in the various languages and cumbersome. Mostly though? It's boring. When I first saw it, I thought it would be fun to teach my parish, but I've changed my mind...
Okay - right around the 10:45 mark the tune devolves into Cinderella singing about how "the look upon my two step-sisters faces, is a sickly sort of sour apple green."
Well, there are the lyrics, and then there are the music accompanying them. I couldn't find any English language videos so I didn't embed one, but I wasn't all that impressed with the non-English versions as sung. So, what are you going to do? Maybe, as the other song says, make your own kind of music.
About syncing up words to music, the move to use modified music for the new Mass translations still has some kinks to work out, either as written or as sung, getting the right rhythm with the right accents in the right places, including not changing the rhythm where it doesn't need changing despite the alteration in wording, i.e. "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will" can be sung pretty much with the same music as "Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth" with only a couple extra quick beats thrown in at "on earth" instead of drawing out "peeeeople on earrrrth" in the Mass of Creation.
Something about this stuck in my head all day and now I've got it - you guys are using the modified music of MOC, ain'tcha? The Glory actually flows pretty well once you know it. In fact, whenever we recite the Glory I sing it in my head so I don't have to look at the words :)
